All Connecticut College Arboretum programs are open to the public and many of our programs are free or available at a discounted rate with membership and for current Connecticut College students. Free Guided Tours
Free guided tours of the Native Plant Collection are offered at 10 a.m. on the first Sunday of each month from May-October.
Free guided tours of the Caroline Black Garden are offered at 10 a.m. on the second Sunday of each month from May-October.

Native Plant Seed Collecting
Collecting Seed for Propagation
DATE: Saturday, October 12, 2024
9 a.m. to 12 noon
There’s nothing more satisfying to a gardener than growing plants from seed. From wildflowers and perennials to trees and shrubs, success can be achieved if you understand what and when to collect to make it happen. Following a lecture in the classroom, we will collect seeds from the Arboretum grounds. Bring hand pruners if you have them. You will leave class with numerous seeds to care for.
This program is open to all.
COST: $25 -or- $15 for members of the Connecticut College Arboretum and/or Mountain Laurel Chapter of Wild Ones.

Painting the Landscape
Plein Air Painting
DATE: Wednesday, October 16, 2024
3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Capture the beauty of the Arboretum with plein-air painting. This outdoor workshop begins with an introductory lesson about the tools and techniques of the American Impressionist painters. Students then paint a landscape using authentic artist’s materials (acrylic paints, palette, brushes, canvas board, and smock) down by the Arboretum Pond. Each participant will leave with a completed landscape painting. For artists of all levels and ages. All supplies included.
This program is open to Connecticut College Arboretum members and current Connecticut College students.

Leaf Peeping
Fall Color Plant Walk
DATE: Saturday, October 19, 2024
1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Connecticut College Arboretum Assistant Director Scott D'Agostino leads a walk through the Campus Landscape to talk about why leaves change color in the fall and find trees & shrubs that can add a splash of fall color to your garden.
This program is open to all.

ArboFest
Autumnal Concert in the Arboretum
DATE: Saturday, October 19, 2024
3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The Connecticut College Arboretum invites you to enjoy music amongst the changing leaves at this fall concert by Connecticut College student bands. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, snacks, drinks and your friends then head to the Outdoor Theater in the Native Plant Collection for an afternoon of music and merriment!
COST: FREE. No registration required however, in case of inclement weather, this event will be held in the Harkness Chapel (if so, seating will be limited on a first come-first served basis).
Native Oak Identification Walk
DATE: Saturday, October 26, 2024
10 a.m. to 12 noon
Quercus is the largest woody plant genus in North America with about 85 native or naturalized species. We will visit and study 14 species during our walk on campus and in the Native Plant Collection to learn to identify them by observing the differences in their bark, buds, leaves, acorns and form.
This program is open to all.

Woodpecker Walk
DATE: Saturday, November 16, 2024
1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
When you think of the soundscape for a forest, chances are one of the sounds you think of is the drumming of a woodpecker. Woodpeckers are among the most unique groups of birds, with numerous adaptations for their lifestyle. All of the regularly occurring species of woodpecker can be found in the forests of the Native Plant Collection, and with fewer leaves on the trees, late fall is one of the best times to search for them. Join Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center, Conservation & Education Coordinator, Joe Attwater, as we look and listen for these incredible birds.
This program is open to all.
COST: $10 -or- FREE for for current Connecticut College Arboretum Members, current Connecticut Audubon Society Members and current Connecticut College students.
